Setting a Rumor Straight
by: for the record

Growing up on Ventura Avenue in th 1960's, I was told that the Girls Academy was actually called the Dean Martin Academy For Girls. Was this a common rumor? There were in fact many rumors about that Academy.

My experience with the school
by: Anonymous

My two cents worth. From about 1949 to 1956 I lived up the canyon just to the North and East of the school. My father worked for the gas company off of Associated Road. I had a dog who used to roam over to the school. I would get a call to come and pick him up. The girls were reluctant to let him go as he was enjoying himself with all the loving and attention. Many times the girls would try and escape the school by heading up the canyon and through our yard. They would ask for water and food and continue headed East. A day or two later they would reappear covered in poison oak. They were warned before hand but were determined to go anyway. All they wanted to do by then was get back to the school. I know there were some hard cases at the school but we never experienced any to my knowledge and security was not enforced as I could drive around the school streets looking for my dog.

Unwed Mothers??

Does anyone know if there were facilities for maternity and/or whether incoming girls who were pregnant were housed here? I have a relative who could have been one such teenager around 1943.

My mother was there, not sure how long but she was well liked by the Mother Superior, who cried when she left. Apparently there was a movie made about these girls I believe in the 50's. My mother has a very special gift - she has communication with people on other planets, biblical people.

The California School for Girls property is now occupied by Vista del Mar, a hospital for the mentally ill. If you take Seneca Street off of Ventura Avenue you will get there.

Ventura Reformatory School for Girls
by: Angela - Fun in Ventura

Thanks for the great question Dee. Located in the foothills of West Ventura (off Ventura Avenue), the Ventura Reformatory School for Girls was established in 1913. The school became operational one year later when girls from the Whittier State Reformatory were transferred there. It was distinguished as the first school managed solely by women, including Mrs. Orpha Foster (wife of E.P.Foster) who lobbied for the school's construction and was a trustee for two years. Intended for girls with social issues, the school taught domestic science and grammar courses.

In 1942, five women associated with the "Zoot Suit Sleepy Lagoon trial" were incarcerated there. By then, the school's image had changed and was known as a draconian facility with a hellish reputation. Girls were reported as taking drastic measures to avoid the school, including swallowing safety pins. The school closed in 1962 when the girls were moved from the Ventura location to the California Youth Authority in Camarillo. The Ventura site is now the home of Vista Del Mar Hospital.

You mentioned a cannon that was possibly across the street from the school. To our knowledge, there was no cannon near the Ventura School for Girls. However, there is a cannon in Plaza Park across the street from the post office on Santa Clara Street, where Plaza Grammar and High school used to exist.

Thanks again for the great question!

The Girl's School as I remember it
by: Anonymous

That school is on Ventura Avenue past Barry drive on the right hand side gong out towards Oak View. I lived on Barry Dr. in the early 70s and that school was functioning and people called it the girls school still.
But there were boys there too. I think they changed the name to the Ventura Academy.
They used to buss some of the kids to the Ventura Boys Club and I recognized them there.
The were also allowed to trick or treat on our street during Halloween.
I moved from that area around 1977 and lost touch from there.
I see looking on Google map that the buildings are still there but it's now called Aurora Vista Del Mar Hospital.

Ventura School for Girls
by: Lisa

I remember this school. Back in the early 70's you drove out on the Ventura freeway past a long row of trees. Took an off-ramp and drove a long ways until you got to this school or rather Calif. Youth Authority. I have to say I was a wild child back in the day. It only housed female offenders up to the age of 25. I remember being in the juvenile hall in Los Angeles and they ran out of room and took a handful of the oldest girls. Being 16 years old at the time I and a handful of others were sent up there in our own private wing. We were kept away from the older adult offenders. Some were there for violent felonies and such. I was incorrigible, ditching school, running away from home and getting into an assortment of trouble. Courts used to put kids back then in juvenile hall for this. I remember we would roller-skate, eat great STATE food instead of County food and we would beg the grounds workers for cigarettes that we would light with the built in lighter they had on the wall. We had our own nice private rooms. I have to say I finally grew up ending up with a Masters Degree in Nursing. Go figure. I am close to 60 years old now and I ran across this post while looking at the antique shops in Ventura. Thought I would add my experience.

CYA days of the state raised
by: Kathy

The school moved to Camarillo-3100 Wright Road I think...I was there every year from 1968 to 1974-several months to usually 8 or 9 months each year I think... Dr. William Glasser has distinctly different recollections of treatment there than I do. The school teachers and counselors were good. Mrs. MacNair and Gracie Lou were the best, Mr. Graham too. I guess it is a lot different these days. Yes-we were actually allowed to smoke-8 cigarettes a day...had our own ashtrays-I can still remember waiting for "light up ladies"...it was actually where I became addicted to tobacco, and unafraid of everything else after all the stories I heard. I wonder where everyone ended up...

Remebering the Ventura School for Girls
by: Moses

I was born in 1949 and grew up on the Avenue in Ventura. I do remember the Ventura School for Girls. I was an Altar Boy at the Old Mission and on Sundays' the priest and I would get dressed in our Mass regalia and drive up to the School to say Mass. All the girls could really see of me were my head and my shoes and they would always tease me, cause I was about 12 and they were about 16. It did not look like a fun place to be. It did stop functioning as a Girls School in the early 60's, people who have memories of it in the 70's have it confused with another program where they sent kids (boys and girls) who were having societal problems. Those kids were not sentenced by the courts, it was more mental health oriented.

Do I have memories of this school, yes. I could write a book about it. I was born in 1933 and would say i was about 16 yrs old when I was sent there. As i look back now I can't remember any thing really negative about the school. It was a better life than I had at home. A warm bed and reasonable food. If you didn't abide by the rules, they did put you in solitary, for how long I don't remember. School was provided and recreation. I was there for about 2 years and never a visit from family.

Unfair Sentences
by: Moses Mora

In a earlier post there is a picture, the cover a book actually about the young women related to the Zoot Suit trial. Those young teenagers were sent to the Ventura School for girls, not for any crime they may have committed, but solely because they would not implicate their brothers or boyfriends doing the trial. The boys themselves were later released on appeal because of the unfair trial they endured. Such is the injustices of history.

inside the Ventura School for Girls
by: Anonymous

In early 1970,Ventura School for girls was located on wright rd, nestled in the hidden fields off central Rd in Camarillo. It was a State run Females Juvenile facility, considered a secured lock up institution. 12 living units, housing up to 50 female offenders on each living unit, ranging in various juvenile and adult commitments . These young women were from various social backgrounds, living in both southern and northern California and were required to attend high school and community college, which was located outside the facility. They were allowed to travel outside the facility on weekend day passes also, with either their visiting families, or the staff. Their ages ranged from 12 yrs to 25. My Aunt was a counselor there, and spent countless hours working on various programs, feverishly . Occasionally, she would bring a group of the best girls, to a family holiday gathering, they would share our meals, braid our hair and share in our family gospel singing. Then, quietly, she would gather them in orderly fashion and go back to the facility. Never did any attempt to escape, harm or disrespect my aunt.
In 1976 we began performing inside Ventura School for Girls on Sunday mornings, inside the chapels and main auditorium. The population had increased, and the women were becoming sophisticated in jailhouse mannerism. I was 1 of a few teenage males ever inside ventura in the 70's, it gave me a snap shot of isolated world, such a powerful impact, knowing that all types of teenage women are secluded in a place unknown to most. My Aunt retired as a Senior Youth Counselor, one of the best jobs/calling, anyone could perform. How would i know? I followed her footsteps, and recently finished a 31 plus yrs career as a Counselor at VYCF.1983- 2014. It remains the only faculty to house California's juvenile female offenders, as well as the only Co-Ed facility in the state. The days of great counseling work with our damaged female children are long gone at the facility, sadly CYA was swallowed up by the bigger adult divison CDCR, those of us blessed to be called to spend our working career there , we have a plethora of untold stories. Thanks for reading. .

Syncronicity
by: Steve

As a young boy growing up in the 1960's, we were very poor. I lived in the Ventura Avenue area, and later in the (somewhat new) projects). I can remember playing around the old buildings of that school. and now, 50 years later, I am pursuing a Master's in psychology, and discovered that William Glasser, the creator of my favorite theory of psychotherapy, (choice theory/reality therapy), developed his theory and practice right here in this school. I name my comment "synchronicity" because I'm sure that what Carl Jung would have called it. And low and behold, the word I have to enter below to show that I am not a robot is "thesis". Now THAT'S synchronicity!

I was there in 1995 to 1998 and it was a pretty cool place that helped me out alot!! There was some stuff going on undercover with staff having sex with inmates. That was I guess there thing. Other than that pretty much counseling, church and many staff were awesome. School was great as well. I grew so much spiritually, emotionally and mentally. I matured and learned much there. I ended up there because basically my chances in Kern County Juvenile Hall ended. I was a Gang member who did so much bad in so little time. Go figure I ended up being the lead choir singer in the Catholic Church. I changed so much there. Thank God. Wow so many years have passed and I am so grateful with God became a Administrator/Manager. Thanks for the great memories..

I WAS THERE, TOO!
by: Anonymous

I was there in the latter part of 68'and the early part of 69. We called it the Ventura school of HELL. Only the top 3 dormitories were open, and yes, there were boys there. Eventually, one of the Dormitories was closed down and all the boys, (all ages) were placed into one dorm. Sex between the girls and male counselors was frequent. This practice was so common that the Director was engaged in it. Someone told the authorities and the school was closed down, but I was kept there, living with the same director, on site, in his home, with his family, who was then attempting to open under a new name. It never came to be, and I was eventually placed in the home of one of the counselors families. I only know of one other person from that part of my past.
