Ventura Theater in the 50's
by: Russell

The Ventura Theater did not feel haunted in the mid to late 50's. It was a popular place for kids to spend there Saturday and Sunday afternoons. We could watch two to three movies for 25 cents. The theater was packed with screaming kids for The Elvis movie Jailhouse Rock. The rowdy boys who were old enough to sit in the balcony would throw popcorn and popcorn boxes down on us younger kids. It was a beautiful theater and I loved the staircase. I had my first movie theater date with a boy at the Ventura. He and I attended Anacapa Junior High and we made arrangements to meet at the theater. If I remember correctly we watched the Elvis movie Love Me Tender. I have never heard the stories about the Ventura Theater being haunted. I recently Googled the Ventura Theater to see if it was still there and I was disappointed to see that it is now a venue for hard rock concerts. At least the lobby, staircase and balcony veranda look the same in the website pictures.
