Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this 77-room craftsman-style Inn is a haven for those seeking a romantic beachside retreat or something with a few more luxurious amenities than your average chain hotel.

The historic Pierpont Inn is the oldest of all the hotels in Ventura and still bears the namesake of its original owner, Josephine Pierpont, who opened the hotel in 1910 to accommodate those traveling in the new “horseless carriage.” Designed by Sumner P. Hunter (creator of the famed Raymond Hotel in Pasadena). The hotel has since gained landmark status and remains Ventura’s oldest operating hotel.

Guests can choose from ocean or garden view rooms with one king or two queen size beds. A few rooms come with fireplace and a mini-fridge. Large suites and specialty suites are also available. The specialty suites include two romantic hideaway cottages (complete with English Garden), a 50’s flat (very retro but with modern convenience) and two large suites with stunning ocean views.

“The living room features old-fashioned leather and wood furniture, a fireplace and an office area. The bedroom has a California king-size bed, 23-inch television, and a large Jacuzzi tub. Both bed and Jacuzzi offer also great ocean views. In fact, while taking a bubble bath I was able to watch surfers ride the waves and bikers pedal along the coast.”

When staying at the inn, you’ll gain access to the on-site racquet ball club, tennis courts and indoor and outdoor pools. And, after a day at the beach, treat yourself to a massage at the onsite day spa (services by Diane Loring) or pamper yourself at the onsite salon of Salon Paradiso. Salon Services are by appointment only so be sure to call ahead of time.

A full brunch and lunch menu is available each day. In the evening, enjoy ocean view dining at the Pierpont’s Austen Restaurant. This Zagat-rated restaurant serves elegant California cuisine dishes such as clam and sausage linguini and bacon-wrapped filet mignon (vegetarian dishes are also available). Dinner prices range from $30 to $50 per plate and dress is business casual. Reservations are highly recommended.

After dinner, cross the street to beach and enjoy an evening stroll. Downtown Ventura is within walking distance if you’re in the mood for a longer walk (If not, hop in the car so you don’t have to trek it back to the hotel).
