Let's Talk Wine with Eric Garnier
April 2011

Spring is in the air!

Can you believe that Spring is here already? My merlot vine has just sprouted leaves and fruit trees are starting to blossom.

This has been a busy month of wine tasting. No, I’m not complaining, because that is what I love to do. Tasting wines from so many producers keeps my palate always questioning what I want to drink next, or what is my new favorite varietal is. My tastings have taken me to Cantara, Herzog, and Old Creek Winery , all on the Ventura County Wine Trail. I was also fortunate to taste 2010 barrel samples from the right bank of Bordeaux, and lastly, I tasted several wines from small family owned wineries at a recent wine tasting event, several of them very local.

April brings a couple of holidays that revolve around food and wine. This year, Easter and Passover are both within a few days of each other. In Ventura County, we are lucky to have wines produced by many wineries that will be perfect matches for these holidays.
Herzog Winery
For Passover, may I suggest any of the wines from Herzog Winery, right in the heart of Oxnard. They make excellent quality wines that pair well with any meal. The ’05 Cab/Syrah Reserve, the ’05 Edna Valley Syrah and the ’07 Napa Cab I thought were outstanding.

Old Creek Ranch WineryFor the traditional Easter ham dinner, may I suggest starting out with the Old Creek Ranch ’08 Grenache Blanc. This is a light white wine with interesting aromas of orange peel, honeysuckle and honey. Follow that with their ’08 Grenache. This winery is situated in the foothills of Ojai. With warmer longer days ahead, this is a wonderful setting for an afternoon picnic.

From the Rancho Ventavo Cellars, may I recommend the ’05 Tempranillo or the ’05 Merlot. I found these wines to be great wines that hold up well to any meal. Especially interesting was their ’05 Cabernet Franc. Not quite as heavy as the Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine will pair well with any meal you are serving. Faye and George really do a nice job, so be sure to stop by.

On April 1st, the city of Ventura is getting their 1st BevMo. They will be located in the back of the Pacific View Mall along with a new Trader Joe’s and a new Staples. BevMo is known for its large selection of wine, with about 3000 different labels from all over the world. Be sure to stop by and check it out. Say hello to Kyle Sumner, the Store Manager, he is a great guy.
