GRUNION HUNTING..... WHAT FUN... DO THEY STILL DO IT?

Do the local people in Ventura still go Grunion Hunting???
I remember when I was a kid in Ventura mid-late 40s... the most fun we had with our families was to go GRUNION HUNTING.. going out late at night when there was a full moon and catch those small fish trying to lay their eggs and males trying to fertilize those eggs. Most of the time we would be all wet from the waves catching US before we caught the fish. Then, we would all get warm by the camp fire..... IT WAS GREAT FAMILY FUN.
DO THEY STILL DO IT?

Does that CROSS still overlook Ventura up on top of the hill?

Grunion runs NEW
by: Donna B

Dear Al,
I am not entirely sure, but the Grunions haul up in spring around the new and full moon. If you follow state law you can participate, but if you are 16 or over you have to have a fishing license. I am pretty sure there is are places in Malibu and Santa Barbara. I would love to find out more about Ventura from your perspective. Do you have any photos of when you were a kid? Where did you live? I am a newcomer, and I am always interested in the history of places.Donna B

Grunion Hunting.... MANY YEARS AGO NEW
by: Al Morris

I guess I should have stated WHEN we did our Grunion Hunting. We were members of the BIG RUSSELL FAMILY(about 20 of us). It was in the late 1940s to the mid 1950s. It was a WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD back then...lol. During that time period our family lived in Ventura, Oxnard, Casitas Springs, Oak View and Ojai. We ALWAYS had family get-to-gathers at a campfire on the Ventura beach to catch grunion. We would cook them right there over the open fire and feast.

I was one of those Russell kids NEW
by: Russell

Going Grunion hunting in the late 40's and early 50's with my cousins and family members was great fun. In those days you could camp/sleep on the beach and have camp fires. We would stay up most of the night, hunting the Sardine sized fish at Ventura Beach and the Rincon beaches. Ventura County was a great area to grow up in during the 40's, 50's and 60's.

Grunion Hunting NEW
by: Judy s

I lived in Ventura from 1954 til 1960. I have many fond memories of Ventura. I remember Mother and Daddy taking me grunion hunting. I’ll never forget it. Once I Laid my flashlight down to pick one up and a wave got it. My daddy waited out to get it and it was still lit. Living there was some of the best times of my life.
