Ventura Flood
by: Elizabeth MacMillan

It was later than '62, maybe 1967? Our house up Ventura Ave near Canada Larga was evacuated. Before we left we saw trees & cars floating down the (previously drybed) river from our backyard. My friend's mother fell off the roof of their house which was rushing down the river, and she drowned.

Ventura and Ventura River floods
by: Russell

I lived in Casitas Springs from 1950 to 1966 and in Ventura and Oak View from 1966 to 1969. I left California in 1969 and returned for five years from 1971 to 1967.

The Ventura River was well known for flooding throughout the history of Ventura County.

Our home in Casitas was two feet deep in flood water during the winter floods of 1952 or 1953. All the creeks leading into the Ventura River were gushing with rain water. I remember flood water rushing of the hills above Ventura and through the city streets.

The Winter floods of 1969 were very distructive.
Casitas Springs was evacuated. Highway 33 was closed and people were stranded and without power because of trees washed out and across the highway. People died and homes in the river bed were washed away.

It was an emergency up and down the Ventura River and also up and down all the creeks that were flooding into the river. The Ventura River was running fast and furrious and from bank to bank. Roads were under water and the rain poured and poured for days.

It seemed that winter flooding happened about every five years in Ventura County. I remember roads around Oxnard being under a foot of flood water in the early 70's. I remember flood water gushing down the city streets of Ventura during that same winter.

Scary

We lived in the river bottom in Foster Park. I can remember my parents being up all night watching the water get closer n closer. It crested at 2-3 inches from the house. Very scary for a 10 yr. old.

Came down with my dad to witness the carnage in 1969, the whole freeway from emma wood to man, you couldn't even see the other side, looked like over near the fairgrounds somewhere, Boats were bobbing
around in the ocean freely because the whole ocean in that area couldn't handle that much water, and rose in and flooded the north finger of the ventura harbor....
