EP amd Orpha Foster

Both EP Foster and Orpha Woods were born in Illnois but they were married in Ventura in August of 1874. When and where did they first meet? Was it back in Illnois, during a visit by EP or did Orpha just come to Ventura in 1872 on her own?

Thanks for the great question, Rex!

According to the great-grandchildren of E.P. and Orpha Foster, E.P. left Illinois when he was 3 on covered wagon. They believe they met at a picnic in either Ventura or Santa Barbara as E.P. first lived in Santa Barbara but purchased land in Ventura. Evidently E.P. proposed rather soon afterwards. Though the specific dates are unknown, their first meeting was most likely not more than a few months to a year prior to their wedding date.

Venturans today enjoy many contributions from E.P. and Orpha Foster, including Seaside Park, Community Memorial Hospital, Old Rincon Highway and many trees and parks.

It's a shame that the house wasn't preserved, yet left to decay over time and then get burned down by vagrants. How sad! Shame on Ventura for not refurbishing that house for the sake of its history :-(
