Clocktower Inn

181 E. Santa Clara St
(805) 652-0141

The Clocktower Inn Hotel is in the heart of historic downtown Ventura. Located a few steps from the San Buenaventura Mission and Figueroa Street, the hotel is near some of Ventura’s most charming landmarks and across the street from the Albinger Archeological Museum and the soon to be re-opened Ventura County Museum of History and Art (currently located on California Street).

Originally built in 1942 as a fire station, long gone are the days when the Clocktower was used to dry fire hoses. When you enter the lobby (once the main firehouse hall), you'll find the Inn rustic and charming, comfortable seating around the large hearth inviting; and the staff accommodating and friendly.

The rooms aren’t exactly posh, but the southwestern motif and wood furnishings create a simple relaxing atmosphere. Some of the rooms are quite large and come with fireplaces and balconies with outdoor seating areas. For the best views, book the rooms overlooking Mission Park. In the Mission’s heyday, this area was a 17-acre farm that produced apples, pears, bananas, etc. as well as sugar cane and other herbs and spices. Today, the park is a pretty patch of green with large shady trees. On occasion music or other events are booked in the park so you’ll want to ask the hotel if they know if anything is scheduled during your stay.

As a guest of the hotel, you’ll be treated to a continental breakfast in the atrium. Other perks include complimentary wine in the afternoon and free access to the nearby Club Hollywood Fitness Studio (incidentally, they’re open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, just in case you get the urge to pump some iron at 3:00am).

For dinner you can try the hotel’s onsite restaurant, Hush Restaurant and Lounge. Hush serves American cuisine and is moderately priced, however, it is probably best known for its “lounge” side. The lounge is a metro-style dance club that is opened to the under 21-set on Thursday and Friday nights. And, speaking of metro dance clubs, the popular Candlelight Kitchen and Bar (Landmark no. 78) is also a short “beat” away (and maybe a little too close for some). Not to worry though, The Clocktower Inn is dedicated to the comfort of their guests and will take action to keep things as quiet as possible. That said if you’re a light sleeper, you’ll want to request a room opposite the dance clubs.

Interested in a little outdoor exercise? Walk over to Ventura Bike Depot, rent a bike and make your way to the coastal bike path or up the Ventura River Trail towards Ojai. Or hike up th hill to Grant Park. , the view is well worth it! For a little less exercise, take the one block walk to the beach or simply stroll along picturesque Figueroa Street.
