Was there a school on Casitas Pass Rd (Hwy 150) between the east and west Pass? I believe there was one, but don't know the dates.

Santa Ana Schoolhouse
by: Anonymous

You may be thinking of the Santa Ana Schoolhouse, which was inundated by Lake Casitas, along with the original route of Highway 150, in the late 1960's.

The historic Santa Ana School
by: Russell

The historic Santa Ana school is now at the bottom of Lake Casitas. I am not sure as to it's exact location. I remember the Santa Ana Valley and the old beautiful Rancho homes and barns that are now also at the bottom of lake Casitas.

In my recent internet research of Coyote Creek and the Santa Ana Valley(to recapture my childhood memories of the area befor Casitas Dam and Casitas Lake)I found in old Ventura County Water Department records referance to Hwy. 151 in the Santa Ana Valley.

All the internet history of the Santa Ana Valley and Coyote Creek centers around Casitas Dam and Lake. What a shame!

historic Santa Ana School
by: Russell

Thank you for the information about the historic Santa Ana school house being moved to Oak View on Santa Ana Road. It was nice to read that this historic building was saved. One of the web pages on Casitas Dam and Lake stated that the old Santa Ana school house was under Lake Casitas.

When I am able to make another trip to Ventura and the Ojai Valley to recapture childhood and young adult memories I will see if I can find the old Santa Ana school house on the bluff in Oak View.

RE: Schoolhouse Relocation
by: Anonymous

The relocation of the schoolhouse information is incorrect. The Santa Ana schoolhouse, also sometimes referred to as the Rancho Casitas Schoolhouse, is at the bottom of the lake, near the small island, I believe.

The Oak View School house you are referring to was located on the corner of Mahoney Ave. and Valley St. That one was moved to Monte Via St. overlooking the bluff, near Santa Ana Blvd. It is now a residence. The river rock foundation still exists as part of a wall at its original location.

Old Santa Ana School
by: Karen Bassett Chamberlain

I went to 1st and 2nd grade at the old Santa Ana School in 1955 - 1957. It was a two-room school house and was located on Casitas Pass Road. You could see the cars on this road from the playground. This school building is now located under Lake Casitas. A new Santa Ana School was built on Baldwin Road, which is where I went for 3rd thru 6th grades. We had a 1st grade, 2nd/3rd, 3rd/4th and 5th/6th classrooms. This was a four-room school with a boys and girls bathroom and kitchen in between. Hot lunch was served from a hot cart on each side of the building. This school is now the Montessori School of Ojai.

I think I found it!
by: michelle fitton

As the Lake has lost so much water, what was flooded over is now reappearing, which includes the island, old 150 highway and I think the ruins of the old schoolhouse.

There is a pile of concrete rubble that is south/east of the old tree (that was also submerged) about 100 yards or so. There appears to be remnants of a foundation, some quasi brick flooring or perhaps was used as a patio. Based on comments that it was a small, two room schoolhouse, this could be it. You can see where the old highway would have been fro what could have been the schoolyard.

If you get a chance, check it out.

found at Last
by: Michelle Fitton

correction to my last news:

The schoolhouse was at the intersection of old hwy 150 and Dunshee Road. There is nothing left at the site except a memory.

Prior to its' tear down, supposedly it was used as an office during the construction of the lake.

The rubble I mentioned was actually the remnants of another building.

Re: found at Last

Michelle, in driving past the lake last week, I tried to identify these locations but I was traveling mainly on Santa Ana Rd. I'm not sure I know where "old" 150 is or where to search out these locations you mention.

Any guidance?

Response to Tim
by: Michelle Fitton

Hi Tim,
The old 150 is no more, although parts of it are emerging as the lake drops. If you travel down to the boat landings, you will be looking at a small bump of land that has part of old 150 exposed.

The old highway wound through the valley, in back of what is referred to as Main Island. I believe that it headed towards what is now the bridge by Copper Canyon. The topography was so changed during construction , I am still hoping to find where it all connects.

I hope this helps.
