40 artists represented their arts at RAWards

By Sara Vausbinder

RAWartists Ventura hosted its first ever RAWards Showcase on Friday night Nov.17 at Bombay Bar and Grill. The show was jam-packed with nearly 40 artists of several mediums, all representing their art and talents. At the event, nine winners were selected and announced by a combination of live audience voting and a panel of local judges. The categories included: film, music, fashion, makeup, hair, accessories, performing art, photography, and visual art.

Local Ventura filmmaker, Joel Perkins, took the award for film. Steampunk / Vaudevillian fusion musical act, Cirque Noir, won the Musicians of the Year. Santa Barbara native, Bethany Burns, of B-Line Designs won Fashion Designer of the Year. Rachel Olsen of The Cat’s Meow won the Makeup Artist of the Year with her ornate false lashes. Mariah Brown, a recent graduate from Lu Ross Academy, won Hairstylist of the Year. Rosa Subia won the Accessories Designer of the Year with her custom hair accessories. Electric Liberace, an eclectic mix of music, dance, and party, all packed into one stage performance, won the Performing Artists of the Year. Cliff Montgomery, a local photographer who focuses on HDR landscapes, won the Photographer of the Year and Jonny Blackburn, with his vivid collage-style expressions, won the Visual Artist of the Year.

These winners will go on to represent Ventura in the National RAWards, where the national winner will be determined by a panel of industry specific judges. The national awards show will take place in January at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles.
